The Third Committee deals with the following thematic areas: Human Rights, Social Issues (such as Poverty, the Youth, Children, Gender, Persons with Disabilities, Refugees) and Humanitarian Affairs. All these themes are important to Kenya as evidenced by their inclusion in Kenya’s Constitution. The Third Committee Team continues to champion issues within these thematic areas through engagement in interactive debates, negotiations of resolutions and actively participating in events organized to advance these interests. In the past four months (January to April, 2013), the Third Committee Team actively engaged in the following activities and meetings:
First Regular Session 2013 of the Executive Board of the UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS, 28th January to 1st February, 2013.
Kenya challenged the Board to ensure that the results matrix of the forthcoming 2014-2017 Strategic Plan will address the gaping holes between policies and action and particularly with regard to maternal mortality. The Plan should also address itself to the desires of member states as expressed in the Rio+20 Outcome Document and the Post 2015 Development Agenda. We also congratulated Dr. Josephine Ojiambo on her appointment to serve as the Secretary of this Board.
2013 First Regular Session of the Executive Board of UNICEF 5th to 8th February, 2013.
Kenya is the Vice President of this Board. The position is held on behalf of the African Group and for a one year term. However, the Permanent Representative is now serving a second term. This is an affirmation of the confidence that African countries have in Kenya to continue effectively representing the African Group’s interests. In our Statement during the Session we stressed that what Africa wants from its development partners is partnership to attain accelerated, inclusive and equitable development that secures the future for its children. The Mission diligently attends all UNICEF Executive Board meetings where our position is always informed by the fundamental need to secure the Future of Africa’s children.
51st Session of the Commission on Social Development (CSocD) 6th to 15th, February 2013.
Kenya’s delegation was led by Mr. Mwakioh Righa, Director of Gender and Social Development. In accordance with the priority theme, Kenya highlighted measures the Government has taken to promote empowerment of people in order to achieve poverty eradication, social integration and full employment and decent work for all.
