The Kenyan delegation was led by Hon. Dr. Naomi Namsi Shaban, the then Minister
of Gender, Children Affairs and Social Development. Kenya’s statement highlighted
Kenya Government’s efforts at eliminating the Sexual and Gender Based Violence including
our legal and policy frameworks, programmatic initiatives and institutional reforms
that deal with violence. Kenya also held two side events on best practices and challenges
in efforts to eliminate sexual violence.
Kenya’s voice, as always, remained a central pillar in advancing gender equality
and the empowerment of women, during the session. Kenya was actively involved in
consultations held among member states of the African Group to develop a common
position to negotiate the outcome document. During this session a girl (youth) was
included in the delegation and given prominence by being given a speaking role where
she relayed her experiences. This is trailblazing, admirable and needs to be encouraged
as it does not happen in other delegations
