ENewsletter VOL 1/ ISSUE 1/ 2013

It is incredible that this e-newsletter contains only the key engagements that the mission had between January and March 2013. The E-newsletter does not contain the many statements that we have made to the General Assembly, Security Council, ECOSOC and to Programmes and Funds of the United Nations. It also does not contain the many statements and interventions we have made to the African Group and the Group of 77 and China (G77 & China); or even to Non-aligned movement (NAM), to which Kenya is also a member.

On average the Mission (Permanent Representative, Deputy permanent Representative and Officers) individually attend and participate in atleast 3 separate breakfast meetings, 4 lunches, 4 dinners and numerous receptions each week. In many of these events the PR, DPR and sometimes the Officers make interventions and statements. These are not included in this E-newsletter. The team also participates in negotiations, conferences and meetings related to our work here, which are not included here. This is indeed a very busy, challenging but deeply rewarding station/posting and I am truly grateful for having been posted here.

This being the inaugural E-newsletter (Vol. 1 No. 1 of 2013), it includes background information and a brief introduction to the United Nations. We could not resist also including the former President’s, President Mwai Kibaki’s farewell and final General Assembly visit as president of the Republic of Kenya. We have also included facts on Kenya and panoramic view of the mission’s staff in pictures. In this issue we have articles relating to the key leadership positions undertaken by the PR and Kenya in the United Nations, please see our table of contents for a snapshot of the articles.

I would like to thank Amb Kamau, all the staff and officers of all the six committees, for individually writing up and contributing to this inaugural e-newsletter. My special thanks and appreciation go to Habiba Seby, Robert Osano and Roselyn Bisonga for taking off with the idea of this e-newsletter. I especially reserve tremendous gratitude for Habiba Seby who has done a superb job of compiling, editing and even rewriting some of the articles. I also wish to thank Amb. Macharia Kamau for his written contribution and for the final edits of the E-newsletter. Without all of you, this e-newsletter would not have been possible. The photographs on these pages truly “speak” in place of “a thousand words” and I particularly would like to thank our official photographer, Robert Osano. I also would like to thank Col. Aphaxard Kiugu, James Waweru and Habiba Seby for the photographs they shared for this e-newsletter. This being the inaugural issue, it provides us with valuable lessons for future issues of the e-newsletter; as we say here; the Kenya UN E-newsletter is now on course as, “Work in progress.” I hope you enjoy reading this e-newsletter as much as we did preparing it!
